Old Fines Can Block a Hidalgo County Registration Renewal
An old unpaid court fine can block a vehicle registration in Hidalgo County. Under the county Scofflaw Program, owners with fines and fees more than 90 days past due can be flagged.
Once flagged, a person cannot register or renew until the balance is paid and the name clears the list. The program began with justice-of-the-peace fines and later grew to include some district and county court balances.
If a renewal fails even though the car, insurance, and address look fine, check for a scofflaw flag. From your side of the counter, a stale court balance can look just like a vehicle problem.
