Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park Is Hidalgo County's Birding Anchor
Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park near Mission is a major birding stop. TPWD says about 360 bird species have been reported there, along with butterflies, javelinas, bobcats, and other wildlife.
The park is quiet by design. Cars stay outside to protect the habitat. Visitors move through on foot, by bike, or on a tram tour. The headquarters also serves the World Birding Center network.
That car-free setup is part of the charm. Western Hidalgo County gets a public nature anchor where trails, blinds, and brush habitat sit close to town.
