Old Hidalgo Still Has the County's Courthouse Story in Brick
The Old Hidalgo County Courthouse shows that the county center once sat by the river. The Texas Historical Commission marker says it served as the courthouse from 1886 until the county seat moved in 1908.
The border setting is built into the walls. The marker says the brick came from nearby Reynosa, Mexico, across the Rio Grande. A later fire destroyed the cupola, roof, and second floor.
After court business moved away, the building served as an immigration and customs site. That second life fits the spot: an old courthouse close to an international crossing.
