Turning 65 or Newly Disabled? Cameron County Has Extra Tax Breaks
The regular homestead exemption is only the start. Cameron Appraisal District also handles three extra home breaks: over-65, disabled-person, and 100% disabled-veteran. They can lower taxable value. The over-65 and disabled breaks can also freeze the school-tax part of the bill.
They do not apply by themselves. File the affidavit and proof with the appraisal district, not the tax office. Check after turning 65, after a disability finding, or after moving into a home that may qualify.
The appraisal district approves the break. The Cameron County Tax Office then sends the bill on the lower value.
