Colonia Road and Drainage Work Has Its Own County Program History

Texas created the Border Colonia Access Program in 2001 to fund roads serving border colonias. Hidalgo County used that money until its program wrapped up in October 2020.

The old program still matters when you look at land. Unpaved or worn-out colonia roads can bring drainage trouble as well as travel trouble. The county used TxDOT funds over several rounds to pave public roads in those areas, but the work did not reach every street.

If a map labels a street public, still ask questions on the ground. Find out who keeps it up, how it drains, and whether past county road work reached that exact place before you buy or build in an unincorporated colonia.
