Athens, Texas
Set in the rolling wooded country of Henderson County in East Texas, Athens lies about 33 miles west of Tyler amid lakes, farmland, and the fringes of the Piney Woods. The town is home to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, a state-run hatchery and aquarium complex, and the area's numerous reservoirs make it a center for bass fishing. Athens is also widely associated with the black-eyed pea, a crop long tied to the surrounding farmland.
