Varner-Hogg Shows Sugar, Cattle, and Oil

Just outside West Columbia, Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site puts 134 years of county history on one property. The land moved through sugarcane, cattle, and oil. It also passed through the Varner, Patton, and Hogg families.

The Texas Historical Commission does not smooth over the hard part. The site tells the story of people, enslaved and free, whose labor made sugar and cattle pay. Tours and programs, including Juneteenth programs, name that history plainly.

That makes the place more than a grand old house. Brazoria County's past also runs through plantation labor, ranch land, and early oil money.
