Where to file a DBA in Denton County

If a business uses a name that is not the owner's legal name, Texas treats that as an assumed name, or DBA. For a sole proprietor or general partnership in Denton County, the filing goes through the County Clerk. You can use any of the six clerk locations.

The office depends on the business type. Since September 1, 2019, LLCs, corporations, limited partnerships, and similar registered entities file assumed names with the Texas Secretary of State instead of the county.

A DBA is only a name filing. It is not an LLC, a sales-tax permit, or a business license. Some businesses may still need filings with both the county and the state.
