Thorntonville, Texas

Thorntonville sits in Ward County on the flat, semiarid plains of the Permian Basin, about 38 miles southwest of Odessa and adjoining the larger town of Monahans. Like much of the surrounding county, its fortunes have been tied to the West Texas oil industry that developed across the basin in the twentieth century. The landscape around it is open oilfield country of low brush and sandy soil, part of the region that includes the dunes of the Monahans Sandhills.
