Progreso is a small city in Hidalgo County, in the Rio Grande Valley about 18 miles east of McAllen. It sits near the Rio Grande and an international bridge that crosses the river at the border, a crossing long used for day trips into the neighboring town. The surrounding country is the flat, irrigated farmland characteristic of the lower Valley.
