La Porte is a city in Harris County on the northwest shore of Galveston Bay, about 20 miles east of Houston. It sits at the edge of the Houston Ship Channel, spanned here by the tall cable-stayed Fred Hartman Bridge, and its industrial waterfront ties it to the region's petrochemical economy. The city is known for the Sylvan Beach recreation area on the bay and for its proximity to the San Jacinto Battleground, the site of the 1836 battle that ended the Texas Revolution.
