Turning 65 in Jefferson County Can Freeze Part of Your Tax Bill

The over-65 and disability homestead exemptions start at Jefferson Central Appraisal District. Apply through JCAD, not the tax office. The over-65 exemption starts in the year the owner turns 65. Social Security disability can help prove the disability exemption.

The tax ceiling is the big practical detail. JCAD says school districts, Jefferson County, and the City of Port Arthur grant a ceiling for these exemptions. That does not erase the bill. It caps those tax lines after the owner qualifies.

If an owner moves, inherits a home, or loses a spouse who had the exemption, ask JCAD about the form and transfer rule.
