Lubbock Lake Landmark Holds 12,000 Years of Plains History

Long before cotton gins and a college, people used a spring-fed bend of Yellowhouse Draw. That draw cuts through the Llano Estacado and runs through Lubbock. Texas Tech's Lubbock Lake Landmark protects the spot.

The site's importance surfaced almost by accident. Dredging in 1936 turned up human-made spear points with ancient bison bones from the Folsom era. That evidence points to hunters here roughly 12,000 years ago.

It gives Lubbock County a much deeper story than railroads and campus growth. Before the modern city took shape, this draw was already a gathering place. You can still walk it today.
