Hermann Park Is a Civic Green Space Beside Major Houston Institutions
Hermann Park is where Houston stacks culture and green space in one place. In and around it are McGovern Lake, shaded trails, the Houston Zoo, Miller Outdoor Theatre, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, a golf course, and the Japanese Garden.
It also reaches back to the start of the city's parks system. When Houston created its parks department in 1916, it began with two parks: Sam Houston Park and Hermann Park. That puts Hermann Park among the city's oldest public green spaces.
For people near the Museum District, the Texas Medical Center, or Rice University, this is daily-life parkland, not just a special trip. A morning walk and a museum afternoon can happen from the same parking stop.
