Know Which Health Authority Permits Your Lubbock Food Business

If you open a food business inside the City of Lubbock, start with the city's Environmental Health Department. It permits and inspects restaurants, convenience stores, pools, body art studios, and similar places inside city limits.

There is one date to watch. Starting July 1, 2026, the city will no longer permit mobile food units. Food trucks and trailers will get their permit through Texas DSHS instead. Outside Lubbock city limits, the city points owners to the local health authority or DSHS.

The right authority belongs in the plan early, especially for a trailer, lease, or event calendar. It is easier to sort that out early than during an inspection.
