DBA / Assumed Name Practical

A DBA in Medina County: County Clerk or Secretary of State?

If you work alone or in a general partnership under a business name, the county clerk route may apply. The Texas Secretary of State says those filings go to the county clerk in each county where the business has an office.

In Medina County, the County Clerk is at the Annex, 1300 Avenue M, Room 163, in Hondo. The main form is the Assumed Name/DBA form. A separate form abandons the name later.

LLCs, corporations, limited partnerships, and similar filing entities use the Secretary of State route instead. A DBA is only a name record. It is not a sales-tax permit, food permit, alcohol license, city approval, or trademark.
