San Augustine, Texas
San Augustine sits deep in the East Texas Piney Woods, the seat of San Augustine County, in a landscape of pine forest and rolling timberland near the eastern edge of the state. It is one of the oldest towns in East Texas, having grown up along El Camino Real de los Tejas, the old Spanish road that linked the missions and settlements across the region; the Mission Dolores de los Ais historic site nearby marks an early Spanish mission to the Ais people. The town's historic center preserves a number of early nineteenth-century homes and buildings from its frontier and antebellum years.
