Lyford is a small city in Willacy County, in the Rio Grande Valley of far South Texas, about 30 miles northeast of McAllen. It sits amid the flat farmland of the lower coastal plain, where cotton, grain sorghum, sugarcane, and citrus are grown, and it developed along the railroad line that runs through the county. The surrounding country lies close to the Gulf coast and the ranchlands that stretch north toward the King and Kenedy country.
