George West, Texas

George West lies in the brush country of Live Oak County, on the South Texas plains about 56 miles northwest of Corpus Christi where the Nueces and Frio rivers run through mesquite rangeland. The town was established in the early 1900s by George Washington West, a pioneer cattleman and trail driver, who built its courthouse and helped shift the seat of county government to the new railroad town. Ranching and the oil and gas of the surrounding Eagle Ford country have long defined the local economy.
