Detroit is a small town in Red River County, in the wooded country of far northeastern Texas about 87 miles northeast of McKinney. It lies in the transition zone between the Piney Woods and the blackland farm country near the Red River, in a rural landscape of timber and pasture. The community developed as a farming and railroad town serving the surrounding countryside.
