Sweeny, Texas

Sweeny is a city in southern Brazoria County, on the flat coastal prairie of the Upper Gulf Coast about 40 miles south of Sugar Land. The town is closely tied to the petrochemical industry: the large Phillips 66 Sweeny refinery and adjacent Chevron Phillips chemical complex, built inland from the Gulf during World War II, sit just outside town and remain the area's dominant employer. Surrounding land is given over to farming, rice country, and the low-lying terrain typical of the region between Houston and the coast.
