Liberty, Texas

Liberty is the seat of Liberty County, set in the lower Trinity River country of Southeast Texas about 39 miles northeast of Houston. One of the older townsites in the region, its origins reach back to the Mexican Texas period, when the surrounding Atascosito District was settled along the river. The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center, a state archives site holding records for Southeast Texas, gives the town a role as a genealogy and history stop, and the 1931 courthouse anchors a downtown square whose layout dates to the town's early platting.
