Ames is a small city in Liberty County, in the Upper Gulf Coast region of Southeast Texas, roughly 42 miles northeast of Houston and about 36 miles west of Beaumont. It lies in the flat, wooded coastal plain near the city of Liberty and the Trinity River bottomlands. The area is low-lying and rural, set among timber, farmland, and the piney landscape that characterizes this part of the state.
