La Ward is a small city in southern Jackson County, on the flat coastal prairie of the Gulf Coast well southwest of the Houston area. The community took shape around a rail line early in the 20th century and was named for a local rancher, and it has remained a quiet farming and ranching settlement surrounded by cropland and pasture.
