Colorado City lies in Mitchell County on the rolling plains of West Texas, about 67 miles west of Abilene and named for the nearby Colorado River. Set in a region of ranchland and cotton farming, the town grew up along the railroad and later saw activity tied to the Permian Basin oil country to its west, with Lake Colorado City reservoir situated nearby.
