Vehicle Registration Practical

No annual inspection sticker needed to register a car in Starr County

As of January 1, 2025, most non-commercial Texas vehicles no longer need an annual safety inspection before renewal. For most Starr County drivers, the old inspection errand is gone. The state added an inspection-program replacement fee to registration instead.

Emissions testing is separate. It applies only in 17 Texas counties near the big metro areas. Starr County is not one of them, so there is no local tailpipe test either.

Registration and title work run through the Starr County Tax Office at 100 N. FM 3167 in Rio Grande City, with substations in La Victoria and Roma. Commercial trucks still have their own inspection rules.
