Maverick County Registration Does Not Need Emissions Testing

For most local drivers, the emissions rule is simple: Maverick County is not on the state list. Since Jan. 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles no longer need a safety check before they register. The 17 named emissions counties still need that extra test. Maverick is not one of them.

Locally, use the Maverick County Tax Assessor-Collector. That office handles vehicle titles and registration. TxDMV lists it for renewals, title transfers, address changes, disabled parking placards, and other motor-vehicle work. One caveat: TxDMV's 2025 note is about non-commercial vehicles. Work trucks and other commercial vehicles can have different rules.
