Where Your Walker County DBA Actually Gets Filed

If you use a business name that is not your legal name, Texas treats it as an assumed name, or DBA. For a sole proprietor or general partnership in Walker County, the certificate is recorded with the county clerk at 1100 University Avenue, Suite 201, in Huntsville.

The clerk does not check whether the name is available. Search the name, sign the certificate before a notary, then file it in person or by mail. A county assumed-name certificate can last up to 10 years.

The lane changes for corporations, LLCs, limited partnerships, and foreign filing entities. Since September 1, 2019, those entities file assumed names with the Texas Secretary of State, not the county clerk. Form 503 is the Secretary of State form to start with.
