O'Brien lies in the flat cotton and grain country of Haskell County in West Texas, roughly 65 miles north of Abilene. The town took shape as a railroad shipping point, and farming of cotton and grain, along with area oil, sustained it through much of the twentieth century. It remains a small rural community surrounded by cultivated fields.
