New London, Texas

New London is a city in Rusk County, in the East Texas Piney Woods, about 19 miles southwest of Longview and 23 miles east of Tyler. It lies in the wooded, rolling country of the East Texas oil field, one of the great oil-producing districts of the state. The town is remembered for the 1937 New London School explosion, a natural-gas disaster that killed hundreds of students and teachers and led Texas to require the odorization of natural gas.
