Iraan, Texas

Iraan sits in the Pecos County uplands of far West Texas, about 70 miles southeast of Odessa in the dry, rugged canyon country along the Pecos River. The town grew out of the Permian Basin oil boom that followed the discovery of the enormous Yates Oilfield in the 1920s, and petroleum remains central to the local economy. Iraan is also known as the birthplace of the comic strip Alley Oop, whose creator worked in the area during the early oil days, and the town keeps a park with giant dinosaur and caveman figures honoring that history.
