Grapeland, Texas

Grapeland is a small city in Houston County, set among the loblolly pines and hardwood bottoms of the East Texas Piney Woods about 60 miles southwest of Tyler. Long a farming community, it is known as the Watermelon Capital of East Texas, a title earned when local growers turned to melons in the region's sandy soil. Just outside town, Salmon Lake Park hosts large bluegrass gatherings that draw musicians and campers from across the region.
